Tanks, filters and water
- Let a new tank cycle before adding fish, and add livestock a few at a time.
- Change part of the water on a regular schedule rather than emptying the tank. Treat tap water for chlorine first.
- Rinse filter media in water taken out of the tank, never under the tap, so the bacteria in it survive.
- Keep the heater and light on a timer and check the temperature with a separate thermometer.
Glass and acrylic
- Clean with an algae pad kept only for the tank, never with household cleaners.
- Acrylic scratches far more easily than glass, so use a soft pad and no grit.
