Tanks, filters and water

Let a new tank cycle before adding fish, and add livestock a few at a time.
Change part of the water on a regular schedule rather than emptying the tank. Treat tap water for chlorine first.
Rinse filter media in water taken out of the tank, never under the tap, so the bacteria in it survive.
Keep the heater and light on a timer and check the temperature with a separate thermometer.

Glass and acrylic

Clean with an algae pad kept only for the tank, never with household cleaners.
Acrylic scratches far more easily than glass, so use a soft pad and no grit.
